Hi Curl Friends! I cannot believe it's been one month since Jen Jean Pierre (@jenjeanpierre) and I did our first black business photoshoot in celebration of Juneteenth. If you missed it, you can read the full blog posts called, 19 Black Owned Business You Can Shop in 2020 and Creative Directing this Cushnie Dresses Photoshoot. The love you showed on our blog posts and your engagement on Instagram has made both Jen and I proud to help you buy black, but most importantly, support small black businesses. I am now on a personal mission to be intentional with buying black. My goal is to search for and spend with black business first, then if I am unable to, shop other options. Can I be transparent? It’s been somewhat difficult to buy black first. For instance, the other day I was craving Starbucks, but didn’t want to spend my money with Starbucks. I got frustrated because the nearest black owned coffee shop was literally on the other side of town completely out the way. So I ended up buying Starbucks out of convenience and breaking my commitment to not support them. I felt really bad afterward and had a few thoughts about buying black that I want to share:

  1. Buying black is not always convenient, thus patience and planning ahead of time are key.

  2. Being intentional with our black dollar means doing the research ahead of time, and planning our purchases instead of ad-hoc shopping.

  3. The more we support black business with our spending, the more financial support black businesses have to expand, increase inventory, or even receive loans.

I’ll be keeping these things in mind as I continue my commitment to use my platform and influence to celebrate and share black businesses. I’ve spent the last month shopping for a few of my favorite and new brands and in today’s post, I’m sharing all the details on my personal buy black shopping haul for July.

1. Supermom Culture Fanny Pack

Supermom Culture is a brand I shop often because what mom doesn’t want to be a Supermom? I’ve previously purchased two shirts and a pop socket from Supermom Culture and have loved all of my purchases. So when the Fanny Pack was released I knew I had to have it. So far I’ve only worn it during my runs and workouts. It holds so much and is perfect for moms on the go. The Supermom Culture Fanny Pack is perfect for summer field trips, grocery store runs, workouts, and anything you want to use it for.

2. Pattern Beauty Styling Collection

I’m no stranger to Pattern Beauty having used the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, and jojoba oil (check out my review on YouTube), but  when Tracee Ellis Ross announced the addition of the styling products, I knew I had to buy. Once again the products came packaged beautifully in the Pattern box, and yellow and white tissue paper. I bought the entire styling collection bundle complete with a leave-in, refresher spray, moisture cream, super gel, curl gel, edge control, bobby pins, and a pick. Now of course, I bought this before I cut all my hair, but I have used the products on my short hair and so far so good for me.

3. The Privy Group Forehead Kiss Candle

If you’re a candle lover, you HAVE to buy this candle. Its bold scents of amber and black current scream the perfect blend of masculinity and femininity. I knew I had to buy when two of my favorite content creators and influencers, Ty Alexander and Candice O. Beauty, raved about this candle. They both described the candle as the scent of black girl magic and a black angel in heaven. LOL!

I purchased a size large and it fits like a glove.

4. Hanifa Skirt Set

I purchased the Hanifa lime green skirt set after seeing Ronne Brown wear it, then my excitement for the set increased after watching Hanifa’s legendary digital fashion show. I literally ran to my computer and ordered the set. This is my first Hanifa purchase and I LOVE the set. The material is thick and stretchy hugging all curves. It's very well made and won’t stretch and not go back to the regular size (y'all know how annoying it's when clothing stretches and never returns back to its normal state). I would say this is well worth the $139.

5. Mama Photog Style in Color Coloring Book

My love for Taylor, the eye behind the incredible Mama Photo, runs so deep. I am constantly inspired by Taylor’s passion for creating visual stories where black women are stars. Her new Style in Color coloring book is perfect for young black girls to see themselves. I bought the color book for my niece and she absolutely loves it. We all know that representation matters and Style in Color is the perfect coloring book for black girls everywhere.

6. 30 and Gold Workout Set

Now we all know I love a cute workout outfit and my love of athletic leisure runs deep. I was a little skeptical of 30 and Gold, but decided to order because I want to wear more black owned workout attire. I’m really happy to report that I love my set. The material is high quality similar to that of Nike or Lululemon and has great stretch. The shorts are high waisted and did not roll down. I will be purchasing more sets from 30 and Gold
